Blue Hills Church in Kansas City is committed to being “A place to love. A place to grow. A place to experience God.” As such, they are also committed to the spiritual growth and development, educational training, economic empowerment, and social advocacy of their local community.

As a part of their commitment to their local community, Blue Hills Church started a food pantry to benefit those in need within their congregation and community. They work in conjunction with Harvesters Community Food Network (another Houston’s donation recipient) and other independent donations.

Houston’s was able to provide Blue Hills with a variety of Monin and Torani syrups, Torani Real Fruit Lemonade, Sipp soda, and Umpqua Oats Oatmeal. The nearly 260-pounds of donations will help fill the food pantry and provide warm/cold beverages for community members in need.

Have you ever had a co-worker that loves to sing while they work? Not whistle while they work, but actually sing? Leo Forman loves to keep everyone in Kansas City entertained by singing and “aggravating everyone, but always in a good way,” says Brenda Willett, KC Swing Shift Supervisor. Leo doesn’t just sing at work. In his spare time, he also writes and plays music. While he mostly raps and sings R&B, he has been known to sing a little country now and then.

Leo not only serenades his coworkers, but is also willing to do whatever is asked of him and hardly ever misses a day of work. “Leo is a dynamic guy who brings energy into a room just by his presence,” says Robert Jones, KC Warehouse Manager, “Not only is [Leo] a hard worker, he is fun to have around and he brings out the best in his co-workers. It is impressive to see his overall productivity without errors.”

Leo really likes working for Houston’s because of the fun and hardworking environment. He always strives to be the best he can be as an Order Picker and Loader.

Leo’s main love and his first priority are his four children: 1 boy and 3 little girls. He loves taking his kids to the Kansas City Chiefs football games whenever he has the chance.

When not busy with his kids and writing music, Leo also really enjoys writing fiction and hopes to one day write a book. Maybe it will be about how he almost played pro football as a running back after high school, but a knee injury sidelined the dream career. Or maybe he’ll write about his time in theater or ballet while attending school, which he admits that he absolutely loved.

Thank you for all you do for Houston’s, Leo! And congratulations on earning Employee of the Month in Kansas City for December 2017!

Maureze, Tony, and Marsha enjoy the festivities

Houston’s Kansas City facility employees came together in 80’s prom style, on Saturday, November 18th, to celebrate the holidays. The party started off right with some delicious hors-d’oeuvres and great conversations.

The delicious Italian buffet was provided by Trezo Mare. From stuffed chicken and roast beef, to salmon and a potato bar, the food is always a favorite! Casino games and a photo booth entertained employees between the meal and when annual awards were given. Games included craps, blackjack, roulette, and poker and the photo booth had many fun props that to take pictures with; which, seemed to be the most popular activity of the night as the area near the photo booth was always very crowded.

To add an additional element of fun to the evening, “superlative” awards were given to deserving employees. What are “Superlatives” you may be asking? Given the high school prom theme, a set of honors were created, just like back in high school (i.e.: best looking, most athletic, most likely to succeed, etc.). The 2018 Duct-Tape Award was given to Ken White for being able to fix just about anything. Marsha Batiste won the Pom-Pom Award for having the most team spirit. And The Lochness Award went to Marley Stephenson, for being least likely to be found.

The most anticipated event of the night came after the “Superlatives,”  in which Leo Forman was awarded the grand prize cash award.

Doug Medina, Employee of the Month

Doug Medina started with Houston’s in April 2017 as a second shift reach truck operator replenishing stock in pick locations and putting away stock in overflow locations. Cross-trained and willing to help out wherever help is needed, he also frequently assists with picking outgoing orders, and loading trucks for shipment.

Doug really enjoys the people and the friendly, family-like atmosphere. “During Doug’s first month here, he pulled me aside to compliment the leadership team. He had never worked for an organization that went so far to create such a positive work environment,” says Robert Jones, Warehouse Manager.

When Doug isn’t hard at work, he enjoys playing in a drum and bugle corps, listening to old rock music, and can often be found attending local live music shows on the weekends. He is also an avid Kansas City Chiefs football fan. On any given Autumn Sunday, you can count on Doug either watching football or at a live music event. Once a year, Doug and his friends have a reunion at which they all get together to play their various musical instruments. Doug plays the bugle and trumpet.

Doug is originally from New Jersey, and with a passion for travel, has been all over the country. As a history buff, he especially enjoys visiting museums and exploring nature.

Doug’s commitment to helping wherever help is needed, and accomplishing tasks efficiently have earned him Employee of the Month honors for August 2017. Congratulations, Doug! And thank you for all of your hard work!
